Fall 2018 Report

Hello Trappers,

I hope things are going well for you and you are looking forward to the fall and winter trapping seasons.  I was unable to attend the summer convention because we had a family wedding and my uncles passing. He too was a fellow trapper and I had spent many late November trapping excursions up north with him. I also was a part of his journey with cancer that not only struck him once but three times. He beat it each and every time. Rest In Peace Uncle Vince.

Co-Director Bill Ruhland was able to attend the BOD meeting Wednesday at the Summer Convention in my absence. I want to thank Bill for doing this for our district and myself.

District 8 held their meeting Saturday, August 25, at Cumberland’s Appreciation Day.  I was not able to attend this meeting.  I work at Minnesota University of Mankato and it was opening weekend. It was mandatory that I be there.  Again, Co-Directors Bill R. and Brad S. filled in for me in my absence - Below is some of the information that Bill brought forward to our district meeting from the BOD meeting.

  • MTA Memberships are at 2076 and rising.
  • Discussion regarding keeping the hat pins.  That was tabled to see what each of the districts thought.
  • Considering whether to continue with the 2-1/2 day convention or go to a two day convention.
  • Vendors tend to start packing up the last day whether it is a 2-1/2 day convention or 2 day.
  • Winter meeting will be in Baxter.  Legal Defense Banquet will be in Brainerd.
  • The LDB will have 140 tickets to sell.
  • I am sure there will be additional information regarding the BOD meeting, so please feel free to contact Bill and also read your Presidents Report.

I was told that we had a good group of trappers attending our district meeting at Cumberlands. There were two questions regarding legislature and non-resident trapping that were brought up:

Trappers Day at the Capital in St. Paul this year - which I attended.  I had the opportunity to meet with some of my representatives in regards to non-resident trapping. I was amazed at the interest that they had in non-resident trapping.  And those that I did meet with were not opposed to non-resident trapping.   I again would encourage everyone to take the opportunity to attend these special days.   Please watch the MTA website to find out when the next Trappers Day at the Capital will be.

Legislative Committee and what the committee knew about non-resident trapping and where it was going.  At this time, the Legislative Committee which includes myself have not heard anything from President Roggenkamp or the Attorney.  You can look back at our June/July issue of our newsletter on page 47, second paragraph/first column and you can read President Roggenkamp comments about non-resident trapping.  “At this point in time, the language is not completed and has not been share with the BOD.  The plan is to complete the language to then share with the BOD and get feedback and input.”

I want to thank Bill R. and Brad S. for leading our district meeting at Cumberlands and a huge THANK YOU to Cumberlands for hosting our district meeting and also their contribution for our raffle prizes and the children’s drawing – Much Appreciated!

My wife and I had the opportunity to visit with a gentleman that attended our district meeting.  We mentioned to him that we are often looked at as the “rebel/rouge district”.  He said to stop calling ourselves that and said that we should be proud of our desires to see trapping succeed, the questions that we ask and some of our concerns that we have.  He said that we need to call ourselves the “Progressive Trappers.”

Keep safe this fall trapping-
