Fall 2018

Greetings Trappers,

Trapping seasons should be rapidly approaching as this issue arrives to you. While fur prices don’t sound the greatest I’m still itching to get out a few traps. Try to take out a youngster or someone interested in trapping with you this season and introduce them to this great sport. They’ll have a lot of fun and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you have taught them the proper and ethical methods of taking wild fur a truly renewable and sustainable resource.

A huge pat on the back goes out to all District 1 members and C.O.’s. For the first time ever, District 1 has won the Tanned Fur Projects district competition. This means we have donated more fur than any other district and we will have the privilege of sponsoring the top gun in next years raffle. This is an accomplishment that you should all be proud of ! Can we repeat ?, I think we can ! If everyone could donate at least 1 or more stretched and dried pelts and bring them to our March district meeting, can you imagine the pile of fur we would have. I would then deliver them down to Tim Caven’s myself. This is my challenge to you folks, I know we can do it !

For those of you that didn’t make it to the convention, it was fairly well attended and the dealers I talked with did OK. The weather didn’t cooperate at all and I’m sure that and the continuing low fur prices kept attendance down some. Buzz Neprud as always had the buildings all laid  out professionally and kept the dealers happy, don’t know what we’d do without you Buzz!! I also was happy to see some new faces helping out making sure things ran smoothly as well. Next years convention will be in Redwood Falls on Aug. 1-3 with District 7 hosting.

A big thank you goes out to Don Menuey of Two Harbors and Joe Mirau of Hoyt Lakes for their more then generous donation of traps to be given out at our Trapper Ed. Field Day. We like to help each young trapper with a few traps and supplies to get started with. With this donation we now have traps for quite a few years ! I’d like to thank Richard Turcotte, Pete Boorman, and Frank Brula for their donations as well. All these men know our future is in our youth and it is in our best interest to train these young trappers properly and to give them the right tools to get off on the right foot.

I’ve got our 2019 district meetings  set, they’ll be March 16 ( remember to donate some fur ) and Sept. 14 ( district elections ). Remember the winter meeting and legal defense banquet on Jan. 5 in Brainerd, I hope to see you there. That’s all for now, good luck on the trapline and above all be safe.
